Wellness Run.
Today was Wellness Run Wednesday and it was a good run. It turned out to be 3.72 miles (according to mapmyrun). I mapped it out and then went to run it - I guess I was already in the zone because I turned one road to quickly and messed up the distance. I had thought I mapped the right road (ran the right road in my mind) but couldn't figure out why the original mapmyrun mile reading (4.23) and my car mileage reading(3.7) didn't match up. Human error. Oops.
It was a smooth run with little trouble. Every once in a while I would feel a little soreness pain, but it quickly went away. I was happy for that. The weather was gorgeous again today and I'm developing quite the arm, face, and neck tan. I really enjoyed running the new route. I finished the 3.7 miles in 39'34". It's also the furthest distance that I have ran at one time.
If you would have asked me last year if I was able to run 40 minutes...I might have said yes as long as their was a mountain dew, Taco Bell, large stuffed crust bbq pizza, and a Huge cake waiting for me. I couldn't have made it ten minutes.
I felt good today though. I try to watch my breathing and when I was at 3.5 miles I focused on my breathing to see how heavy I was breathing and I was happy with it. I'm happy to be breathing. :)
Skinny Cow
I have been hearing the hype on the Skinny Cow products. I decided that I would give it a go. It was pretty good. This is no official/requested review either - just so we are clear. I just wanted to get something sweet that might be good for me at the same time. You hyped it up - I tried it out today. I got the strawberry shortcake sandwiches - they were good. My wife and I got raspberry sherbert about a week ago and have been eating a small portion of that when we want something sweet. It's a different type of sweetness the ice cream and sherbet. Ice cream made me want more and the sherbet usually just satisfies. We will probably get the Skinny Cow again sometime, but remember...I'm a cheapskate - so we will see how often.
Few Weird Tidbits
I am a teacher and last summer when I was on break I decided to tutor some students. One of these students was from the public school. They really wanted to get into the private school that I teach at. She was a little behind, but worked really hard. She progressed pretty well but for whatever the reason, they didn't enroll her. I run past her house on most of my runs because it is on my route. I am known around town as Mr. Tyler. She saw me and yelled out - "Hey Seth!". I was confused. It didn't bother me, but it was weird to hear a student call me by my first name. I said hi and kept running.
I had been thinking that I had yet to have a dog encounter while running. A couple days ago I had my first dog encounter. It was a large Boxer. It was a pretty dog, little fierce looking, and a big softy. It ran along with me for a few yards and then went back to it's owner. Nice encounter. I had another encounter with a dog yesterday. It was fierce, stood its ground, and stood barely a foot off of the ground. It was a little Terrier. I laughed and kept running. Funny.
TMI coming up? Probably Not. Runner's problem though. So, this weird tidbit is not really that weird due to the fact that it is fairly common, but friction from the shirt while running had created some pain. Apparently, sweat and friction from the shirt will cause pain. I don't think it's much of a woman problem though. I looked up remedies and decided to get athletic soft tape. Worked. Felt good.

If you were to go back one year from today, what would you tell yourself?

Great question! I would say "Hang in there, keep it up...you won't believe where you'll be one year from now!"
Seth--I tape my nipples before every run--unless I run without a shirt. Which is never! That's a lot of tape and it's the only thing that works for me. After my first race ever, I had bloody nipples and was totally ashamed. If it's raining, it's even worse. Those terrible terriers are such pests...just kick em out of the way and keep moving
Great run...is the pain you are referring to nipple related? I was getting that, but only in one of them! I attribute it to the sternum strap on my camelbak too.
What would I tell myself? You A**hole...why didn't you do this right the first time 20 friggin years ago!
Great Post Seth, or should I say Mr. Tyler? haha. You continue to amaze all of us! And I died laughing at the part about the small dog standing barely a foot off the ground. So funny.
And I would tell myself "hang in there, and keep working at it. you'll get there...and tell that boy to shove it where the sun doesn't shine!" haha
I would tell myself to quit stressing and enjoy the ride more. I love running; glad to find another runner to read! Keep it up!! :)
Good question. My answer:
Start now! You have the tools... Use them and start now!
:D
Glad to hear your nipples don't hurt anymore. :) As for what I'd tell myself, that one is easy. "For every bite you overeat, just remember, that is one step farther away from your ultimate goal, and a year from now, you won't even remember that stupid candy bar that you had to eat."
Well - I too have had nipple pain when running. Who knew? Not a body part that guys usually think too much about, but when they hurt, they hurt!
I like skinny cow products, but I have to mix up my nightly treats. I get bored too easily.
Look out for those terriers!
Nice job with the running. One day I will get there too!!
The foot off the ground dog story was hilarious. I imagined my mom's dog (a Yorkie with the same attitude) and could totally picture the scene.
If I could go back a year....hmmmm...I would tell myself to get my act together immediately. I would also tell myself that the future has a diabetic in it and it's not cool! :(
we women get to wear sports bras...
and having a child call me by my first name as if I am a buddy would bug me too.
I call my elders by either mr. or mrs. so and so as a sign of respect.
It was the way I was raised..and it's the way I raise my kids.
Our societies manners have gone down the crapper. I got your question and am pondering.
I would say: start now! You CAN do this, it is not impossible like you believe.
Oh man. I want to be that inspiration in someones life SO bad.
Hi Seth - I've been creeping on your blog this past month or so - as an aspiring runner, I really enjoy your posts!
One year ago today - I would tell myself that hiking up Machu Picchu is hard when your out of shape *nudge nudge* and to hit the gym hard when you get back to Canada if you want to avoid embarassing hiking situations in the future;)
I would ask myself where I wanted to be in a year and then do what it took to get there. It wouldn't be where I am now.
Your terrier story made me remember the school crossing guard today - we have a great one. Today he was waiting for a group of kids and in that group was a mom with a really tiny dog straining at the leash and barking. Mr. Johnson put his hands on his hips, leaned over and said in a stern voice, "You challenging ME? You challenging ME? I wouldn't do that if I were you - You're gonna LOSE!" All with a huge smile on his face. The dog came up and licked him.
I would tell my last year's self: "You cannot control what others say or do. Take care of yourself, and everything else will work itself out."
I like that question!!! I would tell myself to start getting more active and out of my maternity pants!!
I would tell myself, "Hey dummy, there's an awesome mountain right behind where you work...go hike it, you'll love it!" LOL!
That is an awesome question, Seth! Enjoying your blog! Thanks for following mine. Sorry about the chafing problem - no fun! :) And the dog - I got bit by one last summer. Totally unexpected. It was surreal. It just came at me and it's owner (a teenager) couldn't hold it back. Ouch! Been walking for years and never had an issue but I'm leery of dogs now.
D
So, is there some sense of pride in your running issue? I only ask because of the fact that last year I ended up with a saddle sore from my bike (the exercise bike actually). It was a bit...embarrassing...but I was actually somewhat proud of my saddle sore...because I actually had an atheletes complaint!
I love skinny cow ice cream sandwiches! YUM! I should look at the points of sherbet - that'd be a tasty treat too.
@MaryFran -- I would be proud of it if it was something cool -- but it was just painful. Nothing prideful in this one. But i do feel I need to give you a congrats on your Saddle Sore!
Way to go on your run, sorry to hear body parts were hurting though, glad you figured something out.
Darn skinny cows are banned from my house. I want to eat all of them. On occasion I have bought them and then promptly let everyone else have one so it gave me one and one for later. But to have my own package in the freezer would spell disaster lol. I'm a sugar free fudgesicle person, at 40 calories a piece I usually eat 2 a night.
Those little dogs are scary. I've had several encounters with them and actually been bit (not bad). Seems the big dogs are the sweeties. I have a favorite chocolate lab, Stella, on my walking/jogging road that comes running with what looks to be a big old smile for me every time I see her *grin*.
Hmmm, well I think I did say everything I wanted to myself a year ago and thankfully I managed to succeed. I think if I could add something it would be "Get more sleep woman" lol.
I enjoyed reading about your run and even you TMI situation which isn't TMI for me, just normal skin stuff.
I would tell myself to "keep going" because I will never give up on myself!
Hey Seth! No men have signed up for my virtual race yet and that means you have a good chance at winning a hydroclutch bottle in the men's division if you're interested!! Just thought I'd drop you a line!! ;-)
Skinny Cow products are good, but yes, a bit pricey. They may sell their stuff at Target which would be much cheaper. I'm not sure if you're anti-Walmart but I hear they sell them there too.
