A Running Guide for the Overweight Runner

10k Run. Wellness Wednesday. Rainy Run.

Today was my Wellness Wednesday run.

Wellness Wednesday is just me running for no specific time or distance. It is running to simply run and enjoy myself.

I ran more than a 10k today! 6.41 miles.

That distance is longer than any other distance that I have ever ran at one time. I’ve included a map of the route and a picture of me after the run.

I felt pretty good for most of the run. There were a couple times where I could feel my stomach tightening up, but other than that – it was good! Oh yeah, I forgot to tape my nipples (you women don’t have to do that b/c of the extra support you wear, but some guys have too), and I paid for it about ¾ of the way through the run. Ouch! Painful. (TMI?)

Despite that annoying pain…

I now know that I can run the entire 10k.

Oh yeah – did I mention that I ran my longest run to date today in the rain?!

It poured, it sprinkled, it spit, and poured a little more – and I smiled. I smiled because never would I have even imagined that I would be running that far at one time and do it willingly in the rain.

I am so happy that I made this change in my life.

It’s changed everything.

I am living now.

10K!!!

A half marathon is right around the corner for you my friend.

How has it changed my life? I can't even begin to tell you all the improvements that have taken place over the last 5 months. Let me just name a few:

Sleeping better.
Getting stronger.
Emotionally stable.
Depression gone.
More energy.
More patience.
Becoming a priority.
Becoming a participate.
No longer on the sidelines.
Sweating away the old me.
Discovering the me I missed.

Alright man! Way to push it...a new PR in whatever form is awesome.

Getting more fit and healthy for me has demonstrated that I don't have to settle for less of a life anymore.

Two words my friend, NIPPLE GUARDS.
Congrats on the long run in the rain. Your last 5k time was very impressive.

You are over half of a Half Marathon. THis is the point in my running journey where I signed up for my first Half... YOU CAN DO IT!

The decision to become fit has changed the way I live and my life drastically. I was actually thinking about this while I was running. Because I wanted to be a better runner, I started eating healthy. I gave up pop because I realized that it was only making running harder. Eventually fast food became a dread to eat rather than a treat because I could feel it in my running. Because I wanted to be a better runner, I changed the way I fuel my body. I now see my body as an instrument rather than just a piece of art. It is an instrument that is beautiful but needs the right work put into for it to work right.

Keep up the good work!

Wow, there are so many ways that my life has changed, that it would take up a whole page! I posted today about how changing my lifestyle has spilled over into many areas of my life, and my family's lives! I love it!!!

Good job on the run. I remember when I ran my first 10 mile run and I was over the top happy.

Nice! Isn't the rain great! What has this change meant for me? ENERGY! I have a spring in my step! I feel good. I'm losing inches & weight. My kids see my progress and my example. My husband is working out with me. Did I mention I have ENERGY! Thanks for the inspiration!

That is fantastic Seth. Congrats!

Can't say I've ever taped my nipples, or felt the need too. I did my first 10K last month, and within 3 weeks, I'd done a 15k too.

Congrats on the milestone.

I'm still peeved that my 10K got canceled but I'll run one eventually. After I ran the 6 miles, I knew I could do the 10. And after the 10, well, next week will be the 13 miles. It's all falling into place!

Nice work.

Keep it up :) So, how about that triathlon eh?

Way to go on your 10K!!! Now you are ready to train for a half :)

"I am living now." I know exactly what you mean. I look at the person that I was before I started running and eating healthy; and I think, "Who was that person?"

Hurray for a (more than) 10K! You know, if you really want to "train" you should go to halhigdon.com. He's got great training programs for all sorts of distances and for every level of runner. I'm using his 1/2 plan myself right now.

Round bandaids work as well as the NipGuards and cost a lot less. Also if you're running where it's hot do yourself a favor and buy some Body Glide. It prevents chafing and on your shorter runs you might be able to use that instead of whatever for your chest.

I also use it to stop blisters and believe it or not, sports bras can rub the skin right off on a long hot run, as well as sleeveless tops.

Are you wearing wicking running clothes? They help with all that stuff too.

Now that I haven't answered your question at all - hope you have a great day!

Thats one impressive run looking at the map... hope there was some cool scenery along the way. Way to go!

@Tara - I'd love to be able to do a half sometime...I think I might start training.

@Kyle - I liked that PR post of yours. It put things into perspective.

Shannon - I usually tape them but forgot too. I think it wouldn't have been as bad if it wouldn't have been raining.

@Jessie - Thanks. I'm going to look today for places to run the half. It's a whole new mindset.

@Carla - Then write the whole page! it's good to see how far we've come and how much we've changed.

@Frank - it's exciting for me. 60 pounds a go - I couldn't have done it. i also created a post in response to your question about 'purpose' a couple posts ago. Check it out if you'd like.

@Jeremy - It's good to see you around man! Thanks for the encouragement!

@chelseybell - thanks!

@Better - Do you like how I chose to put 'better' instead of addressing you as only 'idiot' :)
Thanks for the encouragement

@Molly - I enjoyed the rain run. I can relate with the Energy! It's so nice to just go and do things.

@Anini - Thanks.

@Chrisfit - I know that not everyone has experienced that. It was intensified because of the rain pouring down and the longer run.

@Jess - Maybe the cancellation just gives you some more training for that Half. Triathlon. I am a terrible swimmer. It is not out because I want to do it -- I'll have to get back to you on that one.

@Staci - thanks. People keep saying to train for the half. What is a good half time?

@Paige - The transformation is crazy when we step back and look at it.

@Helen - I usually use athletic tape and it works well. Doesn't hurt when it comes off but protects against the shirt. I do use wicking running clothes, but with the rain - it didn't make a difference. Thanks for the info! :)

That is AWESOME on the new distance. I'm so proud of you! Even though you had some nipple pains (I will say, that is a new one for me... haven't heard that before) I am glad you pushed through and succeeded.

My life has changed because I feel better about myself. I have a better attitude toward myself and everyday life.

Oooh! I LOVE the idea of having one day a week where you run - just for you. Not to PR, not for anything else...just for you.

I'm so stealing your idea for my life.

:)

That's a great idea! Great job!

My list is similiar to Tara's or I could say - what hasn't changed?

What an accomplishment Seth! You are setting and beating your own PR and that is fantastic.

Hey...thanks for your post on my blog. I have to say...though they did go through rigorous training, running LOTS of miles is what really conditions your body and joints for a marathon. Having run one myself, there is no way to explain the frustration I feel knowing that they only trained for 30 days. I was a runner beforehand. I was at a decent weight and lifted often. Running a full with only 30 days of preparation is NOT ENOUGH and NOT SMART. The doctors, that were following them with meds, SHOULD know this.
p.s. Tara is the friend I was referring to in my blog.

Did you ever see that episode of The Office where they did a 5K for Rabies? One of the men crossed the finish line with a bloody shirt - your post reminded me of that very funny episode!

Congrats on the 10K plus - you are doing so great with the running!

As for your question...I started really living, that's what has changed. :)

Great work man! It really is an awesome feeling to see us pushing ourselves to do things we had no idea we were capable of just a few months ago. If you had told me just 5 or 6 months ago that I'd soon be running every other day and gearing up to run my first 5k in July, I probably would have called you crazy! :)

Keep up the great work man!

Hey! Thanks for your comment on my blog! It's really nice to turn on the computer first thing in the morning and have a great comment waiting to be read!

Great job on the run! While I'm definitely not fit enough to run straight through, I do the first few weeks of the couch to 5k to mix in with my workouts and feel pretty powerful. Maybe someday I'll be a runner, but probably not for awhile yet.

My decision to become healthy has only changed my life so far in that I eat so much better. My days are more structured, as I'm often planning ahead. I like that I'm getting more of the nutrients that my body needs and less of the crap it doesn't.

Have a fantastic weekend!
