I was humbled during my run today. It started out like any other run, but about 2/3 of the way through it -- I had to stop. I don't believe that I've stopped during a scheduled run until this run today. Just yesterday, I commented in my post saying, "If I can run 5 miles -- then the 3 miles in training is nothing." Let me tell you - that five miles was easier than the 2 miles that I ran today. I'll tell you just a bit more about my run.
I was running at a solid, easy pace (about 9'30" mile) and was feeling pretty good about the run. I remember looking at my watch at my markers and felt comfortable and in the groove. Yesterday, I also told you that I needed to try something new to fuel myself when I am doing the longer runs. I had bought a hydration pack (not camelback brand) and decided that I would try it today on a short run to see how it feels. I think it just made me hotter with it attached to me. It did come in handy a little later in the run, but I'll get to that.
I make my way through the park and onto the highway. While I was running - this may sound weird - but I have to keep my ring finger permantly in a bent position b/c of the size of my ring. Now, don't get me wrong, this is a good problem to have (having lost so much weight that my ring does not stay on), but when my ring falls off on the side of the highway while running in the hot and heavy air [ooops] --- not cool. Luckily, I noticed that it had fallen off quickly and was able to recover it.
That wasn't all of it. I couldn't get back to the running after that. The air was so hot and thick with the humidity - that I was done. I walked back home gulping that hydration pack! Turns out, I needed that hydration pack for this run. Only about 2/3 of the way through the run and my shirt was already soaked almost entirely.
I walked the rest of the way home. Ha! It was an enjoyable walk though :)
That's what I got for you today. I hope you enjoyed. Be sure to come back - send your friends too!
How do you overcome the heat and humidity??
(besides air condition :))

HEY! that is my blanket you put that sweaty shirt on! :p
They said on the news that it is supposed to get very very hot and humid for the rest of the week. yucky.
Seth--I had my wedding ring resized for that purpose alone. I think it cost me $30 or so. Well worth the piece of mind.
I'm quickly approaching having the same problem with my wedding ring. When I started this journey, it was quite tight on my finger, but now it's pretty loose. I don't have to worry about it just spontaneously falling off during a run yet, but that may not be far off.
I can't help you much in dealing with the heat and humidity - NOT having to deal with those things is one of the reasons I love living in Alaska :)
I had to take my wedding ring off pretty much semi permanently. I dont want to resize it again (I had it made larger when I got married) until I am done losing weight because it is so old. I bought those plastic ring fitters for it but they dont make it small enough!
This summer I have been able to deal with the weather a bit better. Last year I was a shut in. This year I am embracing the heat, getting a little bit of a tan and going out more for exercise and fun. So I'm not sure I'm dealing with it so much as "liking" it more now...
I havent overcome it yet and have learned to dread the summer :)
I usually start mid-February :)
That humidity is a killer right now. Pretty awesome on your ring not fitting, but I'm glad you didn't lose it entirely! My ring is fitting very loose too and I'm scared I'll lose it.
Living in Florida, I'm supposed to be used to heat and humidity - but I'm not. There are days when even stepping outside makes it hard to breathe.
On those days, having a good treadmill or stationary bike comes in handy. Or you can do like my son and just run in place for as long as you can stand it. It doesn't replace stretching it out and enjoying the scenery, but it will get your heart rate up.
And you could always resort to that Florida favorite, swimming!
Get used to it gradually. Start by spending more time outside. Try to avoid A/C. Start working out lightly.
I work out outside whether it is snowy or humid. It's part of the fun!
Oh no! Don't lose your wedding right!! What a nice problem to have ;o)
My wedding ring has done that before! I need to get one of those plastic guards for it. :/
I run EARLY in the morning, before 7am. Otherwise it's just too muggy here.
We don't have a lot of hot humid weather here...just hot, sometimes! And on those days, I run in the very early morning or I run on the treadmill. I don't love the treadmill, but it is often the difference between being able to run or not, and for that I'm grateful.
I just dropped my ring off to be sized. If you don't want to do that, what about buying a cheap ring that fits you to wear until you ARE ready to size yours?
My husband looked at my hand the other day noticing that my rings are half way up my finger(I have to watch to make sure they don't slide any further)and said, "It looks like we need to do something about that". Don't know if that means re-sizing, or new rings...hmmm.
The heat and humidity here in TN is astounding. Under heat advisory today with high of 95 (not including the humidity).
Seth,
Thank you for your blog. You inspire me, keep me focused...and so encouraging!
I've an award for you at my blog.
Keep up the hard work!
Jae
Man, I don't know how to handle the heat and humidity. I'm just now getting to the point that I can run a bit outside. As for your ring, a lot of people wear it on a rope type necklace until they reach their goal and maintain for a while then get it resized. That is a GOOD problem to have!
Mine is super loose too. If I think I'm going to do something that will cause it to fall off I wear it (them really since us girls have two) on my middle finger.
So far so good.
My "fat ring" is in a drawer until I can get to a proper jewler to either resize it or perhaps I'll just end up putting it on a chain around my neck.
Glad you recovered yours.
I always run with a hydration pack.
When I was married, I had to take off my wedding rings often (whenever I wasn't playing a married character on stage), but I ALWAYS tied them to my person out of view of the audience. Well, during a show where the cast was stomping around in steel-toed army boots, I lost my rings (a solitare diamond engagement ring and a 14k gold engraved wedding band) ON STAGE! I couldn't look for them, of course, so I pleaded w/ fellow actors to keep their eyes out for them and NOT stomp them into oblivion.
Luckily, they found them quickly (and in character). ;) So I know that panic! Time to size that puppy down (or hang it on a chain and upgrade to celebrate your new life!)
i live in florida and have to be creative to beat the heat+humidity.
for starters i dont run when the sun is out at all. i used to be able to do it in the morning before the sunrise but i am a teacher and i cant waste my summers waking up early! so now i go around 830-900.
i tried a camel back ONCE a long long time ago and quickly realized it was too heavy and cumbersome for the mileage i was doing (4-5 m) so now i run with a handheld water bottle that holds 10 oz of water. it lasts me about 1-2 mi before i need to refill. luckily i run along a beach and there is a water fountain so i have the opportunity to refill.
also i might suggest investing in some really good running gear. understandably it can get pricey but cotton tshirts are the absolute WORST when running in heat/humidity because they hold your sweat and become weighed down on you. i only wear tank tops made out of dri-wicking fabric. target has some reasonably priced stuff.
hope that helps! i cant wait for fall/winter!!!
